Robert C. Kane – Cellular Telephone Russian Roulette


Robert C. Kane had been working as top developer inside Motorola for decades, developing mobile phones. He died from brain cancer a few years ago, not without leaving this planet with a message, which you can find in his book:

Robert C. Kane has been actively employed in the telecommunications industry for more than thirty years. He holds a BSEE from the Midwest College of Engineering, an MSEE with an emphasis in electromagnetics from the Illinois Institute of Technology and also at the Illinois Institute of Technology, has completed the full course of study and research leading to the Ph.D. in electrical engineering with emphasis in the fields of electromagnetics and solid-state physics.

As a research scientist and product design engineer, he has been directly involved with programs and projects for the design and development of portable cell phones, radio frequency mobile radios, microwave telecommunications systems, video display systems, and biological effects research.

La solution : une réglementation réelle incluant le respect de la santé publique. C’est possible.

I’d be very careful with this conclusion, it highly depends on the grounding system, which varies even inside a single country, sometimes older non plastic water pipes are grounded as potential equalization. This is where you really want some expert on site, who can check and give you the right advice for your situation.

While the meter shown really give a good value for the money and work quite well from my experience. Though a professional measurement needs a spectrum analyzer. Only those instruments will show the source of each radiation source and the strength of each. The drawback of those meters is despite their price, they require quite some experience and knowledge.  The example picture below shows screen-shot of such a spectrum analyzer, with a few sources named, shows in what kind of microwave oven we have turned this planet. Just a few decades ago, you’d see a flat line, despite a very few minor peaks left (TV/FM Radio).

Radiofrequency exposure in the French general population: band, time, location and activity variability.

Information on the exposure of individual persons to radiofrequency (RF) fields is scarce, although such data are crucial in order to develop a suitable exposure assessment method, and frame the hypothesis and design of future epidemiological studies. [..]

Summary statistics were calculated with the robust regression on order statistics method. Most of the time, recorded field strengths were not detectable with the exposure meter. Total field, cordless phones, WiFi-microwave, and FM transmitters stood apart with a proportion above the detection threshold of 46.6%, 17.2%, 14.1%, and 11.0%, respectively. The total field mean value was 0.201V/m*, higher in urban areas, during daytime, among adults, and when moving. When focusing on specific channels, the highest mean exposure resulted from FM sources (0.044V/m),[..]

Our comment:

The problem starts with measuring every 13s and recording a mean value. This is close to meaningless when most sources, such as DECT, WiFi, GSM (mobile telecommunication) and so on are pulsed.

For instance DECT (base station of DECT cell phones) has a mean sending power of 2.1 mW if not used (radiating 24/7), if used about 10 mW, but the peak power, what is really transmitted is about 250 mW in sharp short spikes as the picture above shows.

Now measuring a calculated value such as the mean value is interesting, but doesn’t tell anything about the real exposure. Just as if you get in a speed control with your car, you wont be able to tell that you average speed during the last hour was well within the speed limitations.

We have done numerous measurements at different location. Exposure from FM transmitter is usually quite low, unless you are close to some FM radio station.

The meter used during the study was the EME SPY 120.
